Service History
USS Indianapolis was a fast heavy cruiser that served as a fleet flagship and carrier escort throughout the Pacific war. In 1945 she delivered components of the atomic bomb to Tinian.
Days later, on her return voyage, she was torpedoed by a Japanese submarine and sank in twelve minutes. With the loss unreported, hundreds of survivors endured days in the open ocean, and only 316 of nearly 1,200 men were rescued.
